One of the 10 Big Ideas outlined in the Tenth Malaysia Plan is “Unleashing Productivity-led growth and Innovation”. What is productivity and how can we achieve this Productivity-led growth?
As you all know, Malaysia had always been championing productivity. Way back in 1982, the then Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir, during the National Seminar on Productivity, held in Kuala Lumpur, had said that “Productivity is something positive and implies the utilisation of our resources efficiently”. We must substantially improve our productivity on a national scale.” He was basically referring to the following key issues then:
· Are our resources, many of which are not renewable, being used efficiently and with prudence?
· How do Malaysians work? Are we getting the most out of their work?
· What are the work attitudes has the average Malaysian?
· How do the managers manage the company and the work force?
· Has technological development been efficiently utilised for productivity enhancement?
· Have we made the best use of our income, both Government and non-Government for creating a better life for everyone?
· In the attempt to achieve a better quality of life, what are the costs to us?
The issues highlighted then are still very much relevant today. With the advent of ICT and technology, it is only the context and mechanism that are used to address these issues that had changed. The key message still remains the same; that is, we need a drastic change in attitude on the part of everyone and everybody has an important role in productivity and innovation enhancement. We should take advantage of the government’s reform initiatives to evolve our business. I am confident we are all ready for change. All these are possible if we continuously re-new the way we do things - that is innovation.
